The Olympic Games are a beloved tradition worldwide, with the Summer and Winter Olympics taking place every four years, hosted by a new country on each occasion. The Olympics pay homage to the original Olympic Games held in Ancient Greece, a days-long sporting and social festival, with today’s version featuring the greatest athletes from around the world representing their countries in dozens of sports and competitions for the coveted gold medal.

This year’s Summer Olympics were held in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11. The United States came out with the most medals of any participating country, totaling 126 medals, including 40 gold medals. The final medal count for all participants can be found on the Olympics website here.

The closing ceremony, which featured a surprise appearance by a stunt-pulling Tom Cruise and musical performances by Snoop Dogg, Phoenix, Billie Eilish, Dr. Dre, and more, most importantly included the passing of the flag to the United States, which will host the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. The events are available for streaming on Peacock and a live TV schedule can be found on NBC’s website.

Fans don’t necessarily have to wait until 2026’s Winter Olympics (held in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy) to get their fix again: the Summer Paralympic Games, also hosted in Paris, will take place from August 28 to September 8. These Games will showcase the best of the best in parasports, events adapted or created for athletes with physical or intellectual disabilities.
