New York City is arguably the best city in the world for theater of all kinds, from musicals to plays to immersive experiences, and there are many affordable options for passionate and savvy fans. In addition to the most popular shows, local and independent theater performances can be found all over the city.

Many parks throughout NYC will be holding free performances during the summer; check the official NYC Parks webpage here for the full schedule, and here for more free outdoor theater options for this season. Some additional free and discounted productions can be found here.

The famous Shakespeare in the Park program is returning to the renovated Delacorte Theatre in Central Park with performances of Twelfth Night from August 7 to September 14. Find more information about how to grab a free ticket here. The Shakespeare for the City company will also be holding a run of Pericles reimagined as a concert experience from August 29 to September 2, see here for more information.

There are even plenty of ways to save money on tickets to a Broadway show, even as they grow increasingly pricey. Many shows have discounted same-day rush tickets, or offer digital lotteries in which entrants can win discounted tickets to same-day shows; check the webpages of shows you’re interested in to see what they have available! Rushes and lotteries can be competitive so be prepared to get up early in the morning if you want to snag a ticket.

While buying tickets in person at the box office allows you to avoid the service fees of online sales companies, sometimes buying online is your only or most convenient option. In that case, many theatergoers use promo code sites such as BroadwayBox or subscription services such as TDF or Theater Extras to find the biggest discounts for certain shows. TDF’S TKTS Discount Booths are popular places to find deals in person as well.

Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway shows may play to smaller theaters, but they are no less enjoyable options. (And who knows: you might be one of the first to have seen a future smash hit!) They are also included in many programs helping fans get affordable tickets to shows.

Finally, keep an eye out for Broadway Week: this event takes place twice a year, in late summer and winter, and offers theatergoers the opportunity to purchase two-for-one tickets to even their most popular shows.
