Like many countries around the world, the United States is facing record-breaking temperatures and nationwide heat waves this summer, particularly on the East Coast. High temperatures increase risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Check out our previous articles for more information on how to stay safe in high heat.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep cool and get ahead of the dog days of summer!
New York City’s public pools are now open for the summer, with all outdoor pools free to enjoy. Many offer free learn-to-swim and other aquatics programs for all ages. Check the official NYC website for pool rules and more information. NYC public pools are also participants in the city’s free breakfast and lunch program for children 18 and under; see here for more information.

In addition, New York City has many public drinking fountains, shaded green areas, and cooling centers (facilities with air conditioning opened to the public in dangerously hot weather) available to use for free. These centers include public libraries, senior and community centers, and more. Some are open 24/7 and others open only as needed, so be sure to call ahead and make sure that services will be available for you before you go. See the New York Department of Health website here to find a cooling center near you.
