New York City is one of the biggest and busiest cities in the world. There’s no limit to ways you can spend your spare time, but we’d like to recommend a few events and activities that you can enjoy at little to no charge.

All of NYC’s public outdoor pools are now officially open, and many offer free aquatic lessons and are part of the city’s free breakfast and lunch plans for children aged 18 and under. Find your nearest pool here.

The city’s public libraries not only serve as some of its official cooling centers in dangerously hot weather, but also provide a multitude of events and classes for cardholders. Find your nearest library here and check their summer schedule!

Many NYC museums have free or pay-as-you-wish admission, or certain dates and times where admission is free or discounted. This includes the American Museum of Natural History, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many more. Find others that may interest you on the NYC Cultural Affairs webpage here.

Many NYC institutions have free movie screenings, concerts, and other performances scheduled throughout the summer, including the Intrepid Museum, Bryant Park, Villa Albertine, the New York Philharmonic, Brooklyn Bride Park, and more.

Also returning for the 2025 season are the Summer Streets and SummerStage events. Summer Streets celebrates community by closing off 400 blocks of public streets to cars on select Saturdays and opening them to the public for performances, art, and numerous other fun programs. The SummerStage festival is an annual block of musical performances (some free, some benefit concerts) in Central Park, spanning many different genres and artists.
