Commonly known as the Fourth of July or simply The Fourth, the United States’ Independence day is celebrated annually on July 4. The Fourth of July is one of the country’s most beloved holidays: you’ve probably already seen red, white, and blue merchandise and decorations in various stores, as well as advertisements for sales.

The Fourth of July dates back to the country’s inception: July 4, 1776 was the date that the Second Continental Congress and delegates from the 13 original colonies officially ratified the Declaration of Independence, declaring the United States of America its own country. The holiday was informally celebrated nationwide every year afterward, and Independence Day was made a federal holiday by Congress in 1870.

Common ways of celebrating the Fourth of July include barbecues, picnics, block parties, tailgate parties, and other big get-togethers. Expect public parks, pools, and beaches to be crowded, as well as the roads, trains, and buses to the beach. Other customs include eating red, white, and blue food, wearing clothing patterned like the American flag, and playing baseball games. Classic rock and country music stations enjoy playing patriotic music.

The most famous Fourth of July tradition is setting off fireworks. Official fireworks shows can be found in many places; New York City’s biggest fireworks show, Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, can be viewed on the East River in Midtown Manhattan. This year, the 47th iteration of the annual show begins at 8:00 PM EST, and lasts roughly 25 minutes. Paid boat tours and dinner cruises are available for a more enjoyable viewing experience. Be sure to get there early: many people gather in the morning to secure the best spots!

Many enjoy purchasing and setting off their own fireworks on the Fourth. Be aware of the laws surrounding fireworks in New York State; used improperly or illegally, fireworks can cause severe injury and damage.

A special note regarding fireworks: if you have pets, remember that they will likely be afraid of the loud, frightening noises. Be sure to keep them in the house to prevent them from running off and getting lost, offer them security and comfort, and consider getting them anxiety medication or equipment such as a Thundershirt to calm them.

Other fun Fourth of July events in New York City are the annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island, named after the nationwide hot dog chain that got its start in the city, and the Travis Fourth of July Parade on Staten Island.

Because Independence Day is a federal holiday, expect some businesses to be closed or operating on limited hours. You may want to double check the hours of restaurants and grocery stores especially. Government offices, banks, and post offices will be closed.
