There are an estimated 281 million migrants in the world today, often having left or been forced from their countries of origin due to violence and other unsustainable conditions, and who work to build a better life for themselves and their families in a new country — a new home. As of 2023, the United States is home to a recorded 47.8 million, roughly one-fifth of the world’s total international migrants.
International Migrants Day is recognized annually on December 18, a date officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly on December 4, 2000, and the holiday is intended to raise awareness of the struggles many migrants face and highlight, from students to workers to families and more, how valuable they are to their new communities. December 18 was chosen in reference to the date on which The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (also known as the Migrant Workers Convention) was adopted by the UN in 1990.
This international treaty is intended to establish worldwide standards of protection, in an effort to ensure that migrants are not abused, denied their human rights, or otherwise taken advantage of due to their vulnerable status as non-nationals of the countries to which they have migrated.
